My Experience In My Life - 905 Words

For the majority of my life I have belonged in the little world, stretching from Chicago to Cleveland and South Bend to Nashville. The boundaries of my known world have always felt like a limiting factor in my life. While my friends ventured to far away lands every year, I would spend the night at my grandparents house or we would make a day-trip to a city. With spring break approaching my family and I were going to change that, we were going to South Carolina. One dreary cold Indiana morning my family and I packed our little Honda CR-V full of suitcases and duffle bags. My brother Seth behind the wheel, my dad in the front seat, and my mom and I in the back, we were ready to go. I rested my head on the window as the corn and countryside†¦show more content†¦My dad quickly pulled the car around to the other side of the building, which was closer to our room, and we unpacked our things. That night I sat searching the internet on my mom’s laptop looking for interesting activities we could do, worrying every time I heard a siren or a motorcycle go by. In my browsing I came upon â€Å"Flipper Finders† kayaking tours on Folley Beach. I consulted with my parents and in a click I had made reservations for noon. We got to sleep in a bit, but woke up in time for the continental breakfast and I was already excited. On the way to Folley Beach I watched, my eyes glued to the window, as palm trees and little beach houses flew by. Until finally arriving to a little building with a gravel parking lot. We walked in and met our tour guide, a stereotypical surfer dude with long blond hair. He exclaimed to us that noon was not the best time for kayaking, but If we came back in a half an hour, we could â€Å"Ride the tides.† I followed my family down the street to the strip of stores and restaurants lining the beachfront where we wasted time looking at souvenirs and other miscellaneous items. Our 30 miuntes had passed and we made our way back to the rental place, and our tour guide was standing outside preparing our kayaks. Toxic Media Theory Whether exposure of children or adults to violent media is a cause of aggression and violent behavior has been an intensely debated issues for many years. Since violence in the media has been a hot topic in society, I decided to create a theory called toxic media theory, and base it off of the statement that there is a positive correlation between crime and toxic media. An assumption of this theory is that criminal behavior is normal and learned. The process of learning criminal behavior is similar to the process in which normal behavior is learned. In this theory, there are five key concepts that relate to each other; toxic media, definitions, motivated offenders, moral justification, and imitation. Not all concepts need to be present in order to commit crime or deviance. Toxic media theory may also cause feedback loops. That is, there may be repetitive relationships between the components of observations and crime. Question: Mixed-method research is more than merely combining quantitative and qualitative research approaches. There are design and analysis issues to consider. Leech and Onwuegbuzie (2008) offer an array of qualitative analysis techniques that include word count and standard content analysis. How might these techniques be perceived by both purely qualitative and purely quantitative researchers? Do these techniques offer additional evidence of the value of mixed-method research, or do they merely add to the confusion over which techniques to use? Answer: Mixed Method Research Is More Than Merely Combining Quantitative And Qualitative Research Approaches The work of a researcher in the process of research is the analysis stage where he extricates relevant meaning from the collected data and thereafter establishes research questions. This analysis stage is difficult for both types of researchers i.e., quantitative and qualitative. Qualitative research is based on analysis and inquiry depends on non statistical methods. Leech and Onwuegbuzie (2008) identified 18 qualitative techniques of data analysis. Most common qualitative analysis includes classical content analysis and word count. Classical content analysis is based on counting the number of codes and the word count is the analysis on the number of words utilized. (Williams Vogt, 2011) A quantitative research is the analysis and inquiry of people with statistical methods. It is a more systematic empirical analysis with the help of mathematical and numerical data. For a quantitative researcher, content analysis serves the purpose of transforming large data into less abstract format. Content analysis implies compressing large texts into categories recognizing the specified characteristics which are mostly done by a qualitative researcher. Word count or frequency analysis technique can be perceived by both the quantitative and the qualitative researcher to analyze his primary data collection. On the whole, qualitative researcher looks into the informal content of the text while a quantitative researcher focuses more on the numerical context. (Digitalmethods.net, 2015) Mixed method of research is the combination of the qualitative and quantitative research and is done by collecting, analyzing and mixing of the two types of methods. Whether qualitative techniques add value to the mixed method is in question. For an outcome of any research to be optimal, mixed method is used using qualitative content analysis and word count. The outcomes can achieve better quality of interpretations; include advanced evidences and other enriching factors.
